Using ultraviolet rays and nitrosoguanidine, from the wild strain of the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma RRL Y-17268, the mutants were isolated that were able to produce pigments of yellow, orange, brown, and pink color. The pigments were extracted and purified by thin layer chromatography, and characterized by their chromathographic mobility and absorption spectra. Cis-astaxanthin, trans-astaxanthin, phoenicoxanthin, β-carotene, ζ-carotene, phytoene and zeaxanthin from biomass of the isolated mutants were identified. The most efficient strains produced about 940 μg carotenoids per gram of dried biomass, among which astaxanthin gave the main part of them.
Key words: yeast Phaffia rhodozyma, carotenoids, astaxanthin, menadione, nitrosoguanidine.
