The review presents data on the physicochemical properties, toxicity and biological activity of nanocrystalline ceria. The relationship between the properties of nanocrystalline ceria and its size, surface area and surface charge are analyzed. Methods of ceria nanoparticles synthesis and modification using biologically active molecules are reviewed. The contemporary literature data and authors’ own results show prospects for use of the nanocrystalline cerium dioxide in biology and medicine.

Key words: nanocrystalline ceria, design, synthesis, colloid systems, sols, oxidative stress, antioxidants, nanobiomaterials, antiviral effect, interferon, antitumor, cyto- and radioprortective action.
